Exploring Natural Dyeing through Bundle Dyeing
Come join us for a hands-on workshop at art’otel London Hoxton where you’ll learn the art of bundle dyeing using natural materials. This event is perfect for those curious about sustainable practices and interested in creating unique textiles.
Attendees will learn how to create beautiful, patterns and colourways on textiles, gaining an understanding of the principles of natural dyeing using natural materials like flowers, roots, food and garden waste to transfer colour onto fabric.
The workshop will cover:
– Basics of natural dyeing
– The science behind mordants and their role in dyeing
– How to select, prepare, and bundle plant materials for dyeing
– Techniques for wrapping, steaming, and unwrapping the bundles to reveal stunning imprints and colorations
Each participant will receive a 50cm x 50cm silk scarf to dye and take home their creations.
The nature of this technique makes the outcome quite hard to predict, however you could aim for a blurry and colourful repetitive pattern, or a more abstract colour field. However the outcome, it’s going to be beautiful.
Materials Provided:
– Various plant materials (flowers, leaves, and roots) for dyeing
– Pre-mordanted fabric (silk scarf)
– Instructions and guides for future dyeing projects
No prior experience is necessary – just bring your creativity and enthusiasm!
